Ne’er cast a clout …

… till May be out. So me mam used to say. I grew up thinking it meant until the month of May is over but know now it means when the May blossom are out. May is another name for the Hawthorn a common shrub of hedgerows. Clout of course means clothing. So the May is flowering in North Yorkshire, you can now leave your vest off.
