Sundial, Bransdale Mill

A mill at Bransdale is first recorded in the 13th century. In the 18th century the mill and much of Bransdale came under the ownership of the Strickland family. In 1811 William Strickland greatly increased the capacity of the mill with the addition of a 16 foot overshot water wheel. It must have been quite a hive of industry. This sundial dates from a few years later, the sandstone pedestal is dated 1819 while the gnomon (the copper pointer) 1824. There is another similar sundial a kilometre further down the dale near to Smout House.

The sundial is inscribed :

William Strickland AD 1819
Quod hora est vide
 Time and life move swiftly
John Brown Joseph Ward
