Rose Castle, Tarn Hows

This 19c former gamekeeper’s cottage holds many memories for me. Of open log fires, collecting water from the spring, collecting and chopping wood, races around the tarn, skimming stones on the ice on the tarn. Not to mention the earth closet. But now it’s converted into a primp holiday cottage with all mod cons. Electricity, running water and a proper toilet. Not quite the same.

Overlooking Tarn Hows in the Lake District, Rose Castle was part of Beatrix Potter’s bequest to the National Trust.
