Baysdale

Looking down Baysdale and the Esk Valley from Kildale Moor. A hazy morning but the photo does show the atmospheric optical effect whereby each hill gets progressively lighter the further it is away. This is known as Rayleigh Scattering after Lord Rayleigh, the British scientist who first explained it. The same effect also explains why the sky is blue and why the sky appears whiter nearer the horizon.
