On very damp dull day it’s hard to imagine the climatic conditions prevailing when these rocks were formed. In a shallow tropical sea sometime between 168 to 176 million years ago otherwise known as the mid Jurassic period. The tough sandstones and ironstones cap the softer shales below. I was looking for supposed remains of the Ingleby Moor ironstone located near the top of Ingleby Incline but couldn’t find any trace. So I took this photo as a consolation and climbed into the cloud.
