Shrove Tuesday

The day to use up all your eggs and flour before the forty days of fasting for lent begins tomorrow. Shrove comes from the Old English word shrive meaning to absolve or to confess. And the best way to use up all your eggs and flour is to make pancakes. In Great Ayton it’s tradition for the local primary school children to enjoy pancake races on the High Green. But alas this is the 21st century and a lone old man wandering with a camera was likely to raise a few eyebrows so to avoid any confrontation no photograph of kiddies enjoying themselves just a row of frying pans in preparation for the next race.
