Roseberry Topping

The biggest hill in all Yorkshire according to Margery Murpoot, a character in Joseph Reed’s 18th century farce, ‘The Register Office’. In the play, which opened at Drury Lane in 1761, country girl Margery says

It’s t’ biggest hill i’ all Yorkshire. It’s aboon a mahle an’ a hauf heegh, an’ ez caud ez ice at t’ top on t’ yattest daa i’ Summer; that it is.

Reed was born in Stockton-on-Tees.

The photo shows the western aspect of the hill and was taken from Newton-under-Roseberry.
