Site Survey – Capt. Cooks’ Cottage Site

Ordnance Survey surveyors carrying out a survey of the humps and bumps of the site where the young James Cook is believed to have lived when his father was employed at Aireyholme Farm near Great Ayton.

An excavation last year found evidence of a dwelling on the site which is part of the National Trust’s Cliff Ridge Wood property. A further excavation is planned to begin next week.

In the photo the yellow flags locate bottoms of slopes, red ones the tops.
