Hob on the Hill

Another feature named after hobs, those mysterious dwarf like creatures that inhabit the moors. This limestone boundary is just a few hundred metres from Hob Cross the subject of my 25 February posting. The stone is also inscribed R.C. 1798 marking the boundary of Ralph Chaloner estate.

The stone stands on a Bronze Age round barrow which was excavated in 1863 by the Rev. R C Atkinson. Several cremations were found together with flints, an arrow head and pottery.
